Me wearing the Jacket, strange but cars kept flashing me in a “your dazzling me at night on a country lane type way”.
Across town I go in the jacket looking like a rookie road sweeper.
Pick the bike up, little test run, ARRRH its still clicking.
The plan now is to give it a ride for a bit, see if it stops or gets worse and take it back next week.
So off we go! As I mentioned before, one of the other items I had ordered was a set of padded cycling shorts.
Wow! I had now found paradise. The cushioning effect they had against the seat was marvellous. Yes they look like nappies, but hey, saves stopping to have a wee. Just needs ringing out at the end of the day.
Wonder what that smell is?
Of we set through town, two slight altercations with buses and we make the delightful restored Wicker.
Restored to the condition it would have been in the middle ages, the land the council forgot.
I plan to go via the five wears river walk to Uncle M’s. Having shared this news with the ballast he rhythmically chants “Mcdonalds” in my ears for the next 40 minutes
So under the wicker arches is the first suspended bridge section I intend to tackle, suspended on silver looking cables, nestling above the River Don.
However some wag had thought he could make a few bob and nicked the silver looking cables, path closed.
Back to the road and re join the path later.
Back on the river side walk I wonder how people can claim Sheffield is no longer industrial. (Sure, Thatcher did the steel industry what the Luftwaffe failed to do) But it is still an industrial city.
I can hardly say this is an attractive route, sure I am not catching it at its best, the rivers been in flood and every branch, twig or root has a bit of polythene stuck to it, it don’t look good. Through the hedges you can see factories. Cans and things lay on the muddy banks.
I suppose the spring will bring new growth to paper over the crap.
I wave to two fisher men. Looking at where they are fishing they appear to have caught two washing machines. Perhaps that’s how they have been cleaning the Don, with washing machines.
I pass a factory what must make end of dog parts, the floor is littered with them outside the factory. They must be rejects, but it looks an eye saw.
Now if I sound anti Sheffield nothing could be further from the truth. I love the place to bits, it’s like having a brother or sister. Only you can hit them, if any one else tries, god help them.
Sheffield strange place but I love it, the people, how we thank bus Drivers when we get off (perhaps they do that elsewhere to), even when the bus drivers the most miserable sod in the world and cant even grunt at you when you get on , we say Thank you. This does not apply to all, just some.
Only in Sheffield can we have an airport and the sell it to make more factories.
God I love this place.
On to Uncle M’s. BALLAST HAS HAPPY MEAL. Then whilst sat out side, runs about, falls over, bites his lip in the fall and hurts his hands, cries for twenty minutes. I try to hide (from embarrassment), but it’s not easy in my yellow jacket.
Not a very happy meal.
Off we set for home and to cheer him up I suggest we go past the airport (whilst its still there). It will take 40 mins longer and I will encounter my arch rival (the big hill that I need to go up).

After 5 minutes the ballast falls asleep, and sees nothing of the airport which appears full of activity (1 plane moves).

Up the hill from hell and home to a total disaster, I can’t believe it my world came crashing down.

My yellow jacket had a spot of mud on it!

yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-42646562173181641712007-01-25T10:48:00.000-08:002007-01-29T10:49:01.550-08:00
On arriving home I thought that a nuclear reactor had had a melt down in my house as a huge yellow glow was seeping out the letter box and cracks in the curtains. The Meadow hall sign which points into the court building. Or the third one which points back to where I have just come from labelled Armageddon, I choose Armageddon, it nice this time of year.
On the way back I stop to have a drink. The Ballast makes contact with mother earth for the first time as I can’t hold the cycle up stood still.

CCC cycles Sheffield has agreed to kindly assist in my mission by servicing the cycle.
yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-75217721431303797242006-12-30T10:25:00.000-08:002007-01-02T10:26:05.130-08:00
After a few short cycle rides a round the Christmas period I decided that it was time for a step up in distance with a 20 mile trip to the out skirts of Chesterfield, to a rail museum which would keep the ballast happy and interested.
We had the added problem of wind (weather not me).
0830 we set off, legs not really recovered from cycle rides previous as I face the first hill only 19 and half mile to go. Wonder how far I will get before I turn back.
After getting out of the hills of Sheffield I link up with a path which was a former rail line, good steady riding with no hilly extremes.
Good progress made along the cycle route.
About a mile away from my destination I see a sign which says footpath to rail museum, so instead of sticking with the cycle track I think what difference can there be in a footpath to a cycle track,,,big mistake as I have to lift the cycle up and down flights of stairs with the ballast on the back, through boggy fields and under a flooded 50 yard tunnel which, if I fall off, there was only water to land in, worse still the water was muddy so I had no idea what I was riding in to - broken metal , world war 2 depth charges?. However the destination was in sight and after some two hours riding we are there.
However no welcoming café to rest and prepare for the return, the place is shut till the next week, the ballast is not happy as I have been promising trains for the last 8 miles!
The return leg is fairly straight forward as I miss the flooded booby trapped tunnel, till I hit the hills of Sheffield, which I find a real struggle.
But we made it, saddle sore, legs aching and loss of feeling in my hand which took two days to return.
With the Christmas holidays ending the cycle can rest till next week and give my muscles time to revive.
yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-92140277240092027522006-12-29T22:58:00.000-08:002006-12-29T23:03:46.584-08:00Quick picture
Here's a quick picture of the Ballast donning his cycling gear.yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-10549832130740256942006-12-24T10:09:00.001-08:002006-12-24T10:09:54.381-08:00
Her indoors decided to join me and the ballast biking on the understanding we cycled to Uncle M’s.

Calories burnt 300, calories consumed 1000 plus.

Derailleur still troublesome so I turn every screw I could see.

Father Christmas expected overnight. Dear Santa I need a derailleur, some lights, pannier, tool kit, new legs, a seismic shifting of the earths crust around Sheffield to remove the hills, well the ones going up at least.
yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-65102668378956392092006-12-23T10:08:00.000-08:002006-12-24T10:08:51.074-08:00
Quick jog to work on leg strength.

Adjusted the brakes, on the bike not on me.
yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-954693331961619122006-12-21T10:07:00.000-08:002006-12-24T10:08:17.158-08:00
Frosty day in the city, me and the ballast off for a quick 8 mile cycle.

My leg strength is improving and I am now able to attack hills peddling in lower gears, sometimes I have to make a retreat though.

On return the ballast was a little bit cold at the fingers and toes.

Derailleur on cycle a bit trouble some at the moment, misses gears out leaving my legs spinning and no traction.
yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-82045491183983549482006-12-16T09:18:00.000-08:002006-12-24T09:18:21.757-08:00D Day (in a way), set my target on getting to my Dads and back some 4 miles away.
Some 3 hours later (including layover) mission accomplished, legs ache, left ankle needs a rest but other than that, all went well, sun even shone. Confidence high, but wonder how the achey bits will be in the morning.

OHH a bit saddle sore as well.
yorkshiredavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10553072191938188873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9023200929544457228.post-73251790741987794892006-12-15T09:15:00.000-08:002006-12-24T09:16:51.706-08:00
Friday, wet you through rain, off training on the cycle with the ballast on board.
